I think I expected too much out of this novel and therefore had room only for disappointment

I think I expected too much out of this novel and therefore had room only for disappointment. Though I finished the book in its entirety, I wrote a short review on my blog about halfway through, expounding on the aspects of the book that irritated me. I have adapted it herein.

First, the main "heroine, chiffon Low-high Ruched Knee-length Cocktail Dresses" Marlena, is incredibly flat & boring. The narrator/main character, Jacob, is clearly infatuated with her, but I'm not sure why other than she looks good in pink sequins. She's married to her arrogant, bipolar boss, so maybe there's some sort of damsel-in-distress complex triggered in our hero. Regardless, I don't care about her. She doesn't engage me or hold any allure. The novel really ends up being more of a romance tale, and to be honest I think it would be just as interesting (more so?) without Marlena.

There were several instances of explicit sexual encounters fairly close together that annoyed me. Perhaps I'm too modest but I got tired of the sex. Not even actual sex as much as "sexual elements." The instances of it are over-the-top and slightly grotesque to the point of distraction. It's like the author was trying to prove something: "Look, I can write like a man: men think about sex all the time!" I'm not sure what exactly she was trying to prove, but it was distracting. The grotesque sexual aspects calmed down after a bit, but it distracted me through the center of the novel.

Furthermore, I'm not even sure the narrator is believable/realistic. It takes him too long to figure things out; he likes to describe a scene in excruciating detail before he "realizes what's going on." If I had been standing next to him, by the time he "realizes what's going on,purple one shoulder beaded Crystal long Prom dresses" I would have smacked him over the head and left. Too often he encounters situations in a total stupor.High-grade Black A-line Chiffon Beaded Prom Dress OK, so people don't always react instantaneously. But when you describe it in exhaustive detail, it doesn't make me think something is happening quickly. Additionally, I can't quite reconcile the young Jacob to the 90/93-year-old Jacob.chiffon Elegant one shoulder beaded A-line long Celebrity Dresses A lot can change in 70 years,Graceful A-line Beads Halter Empire Prom Dress but I can't see the sensitive, humble Jacob I meet in large stretches of the novel with the bitter, crotchety old Jacob I meet in shorter excerpts.

Speaking of descriptions, every strong smell is described as "overwhelming." Really, is that the best adjective you've got?

The story has so much potential in its unique setting: Depression/Prohibition-era traveling circus. This alone kept me reading because I was curious at least to see where the narration was going. Will it end with Jacob's death or something else? How long does he stay on the circus, etc? So I guess kudos to the author for that: at least the uniqueness of the setting & atmosphere keeps me intrigued.

Don't confuse this book

Disclaimer: Don't confuse this book with a biography of Mary Boleyn. It's fiction all the way.Sheath/Column Ruching Gold Chiffon Prom dresses It's a good read when you remember that this is fiction and not a blow-by-blow account of historical events.Simply Chiffon sheath evening dresses And because it is fiction, Gregory is able to play a little fast and loose with historical fact. Mary was most likely the oldest Boleyn child, not the youngest as presented here. She had also served the French kings court, just as Anne did, but was sent home in disgrace after tales of her promiscuity got out,one shoulder Sheath Beading Dark Navy Chiffon Prom dresses including the fact that she was probably also that king's mistress. She was probably not the young, inexperienced girl Gregory chooses to portray her as. Gregory also depends heavily on Retha Warnicke's thesis that a homosexual ring surrounded Anne and included her brother George. This has been widely discredited by historians,Simple Chiffon A-line Halter Flowers Evening dresses since both Anne and George were very religious, and George was also a renowned womanizer.

Otherwise, it was a decent book. There were parts I thought went a little far, especially with Mary and George teaching Anne "whore's tricks" to woo the king without actually having sex with him. Granted, activity like this may have happened, but I don't necessarily want to read about it. I loved the love story between Mary and William Stafford, and would have liked to seen more of the relationship between Anne and Henry, when they were younger, seemingly in love,2013 Wholesale Cheap Bride Dresses and she was as much a partner and advisor in his affairs as king (especially in religious thinking and such) as any man at court.

Somehow though, this book has tarnished my romanticized concept of courtly behavior. It's horrifying to consider that some of the political wrangling and the use of women as temptations, mistresses, and pawns to rise in society, titles, and the court probably happened, at least to some extent. If this was the way life was in those days, I would hope that I was a commoner. Because being in the court and used as someone's chattel to get what they wanted with no regard for my desires or who I loved would have been awful.

I know almost nothing about art

I know almost nothing about art, but even I can tell that Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer is a brilliant painting; 'captivating' is probably the best word to describe it. One presumes that Chevalier agrees with me, and this is what lead her to write a novel about the painting, its subject and its creator. So,Graceful A-line Beaded One Shoulder Red Prom Dress is the novel as captivating as the piece that inspired it?

Chevalier is probably one of the best-known historical novelists of the last ten years, with this book always in the foreground when she is discussed.New Strapless Chiffon Short/Mini Beaded Cocktail Dresses As far as historical information goes, I think she does okay with it. I had a pretty clear picture of the Netherlands in the seventeenth century by the time I was done with the book (whether or not its accurate or not is another matter), but I felt at times that there wasn't that detail that critics proclaimed about on the cover.

The characters, I feel, are never truly developed. Vermeer himself remains a mystery throughout, even to the protagonist and narrator, Griet, who appears to have some connection with him. Griet meanwhile,New A-line Strapless Chiffon Pink Beading Long Prom Dresses is what I would describe as a stock teenage girl character. She is similar to many characters I've read before, and yet she does not really advance on that.

The narrative style is one that I would have adored at 14, but by now find to be pedestrian. This is first person narrative at its simplest (and blandest) and I don't feel that we gain anything from it - the novel may just as well have been in third person and would not have suffered for it. It may even have benefited from it.

The structure is interesting. Split into parts that represent years, rather than having chapter breaks makes it difficult to find a stopping place at times, and it is this more than anything else that makes a page turner of the novel. Meanwhile, the entire thing seems to be building to the inevitable moment when Vermeer will paint Griet. The scenes are handled with less intensity than I had hoped for from the build up, and once the painting is finished,Simply Chiffon Square Evening Dresses Chevalier seems to want nothing but for the novel to be over too, and closes it down rather too quickly.

Perhaps the fact that little is known about Vermeer's life would imply that a fictional version of it would be easy to tell. Sadly, the gaps in knowledge seem to be too big to fill.Noble Unique Capped Sleeves Scoop Column Prom Dress

At the end of the novel, I had discovered how this work came about, the girl staring out from it, but still had almost no real idea of the man behind it. It is, in my opinion, a failure in this respect.

The New Secret to Being Slim, Fit, and Happy for Life

You ate a cupcake at the office birthday party (even though you swore you wouldn't). You skipped the gym to go home and watch TV (can't resist those Real Housewives!). And now you're beating yourself up for it, right? We know, because we've all been there. It's become far too common for us to mentally punish ourselves this way, light yellow chiffon strapless beaded bridesmaid dresses thinking we'll feel shamed into better behavior, observes Kristin Neff, PhD, associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin.

But being our own worst Mean Girl is counterproductive. According to research in the burgeoning new field of self-compassion, a little TLC may go a lot further in motivating you to work out, lose weight, and get Water melon Chiffon sheath one shoulder bridesmaid dresseshealthier overall. "Self-compassion means being kind to yourself, especially when you make a mistake," explains Neff, author of Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind. "As it turns out, caring about yourself is one of the best possible motivators for doing what's healthy for you rather than what's harmful to you."

As you'd expect, quitting the trash talk makes you feel good. In fact, brain-imaging scans done on Buddhist monks by University of Wisconsin neuroscientists suggest that self-compassion lessens anxiety and depression. But surprisingly, being kind to yourself also has a concrete effect on your behavior and physical well-being. "Studies show that self-compassionate people are more proactive about looking after themselves," says Duke University professor of psychology and neuroscience Mark Leary, PhD, who's been involved with much of the research in this field. "They're more likely to take vitamins, practice safe sex,Grape purple Chiffon a-line beaded eveing dresses and go to the doctor when they're sick." Read on to see how you can score big health gains by giving yourself a break.

Boost motivation
Most people play drill sergeant with themselves: "I have to go to Spinning every day this week!" But using phrases like have to and setting too-strict goals are a recipe for falling short—and feeling lousy about it. In a study published in the journal Motivation and Emotion,Purple Scoop Capped Applique beaded Empire Prom Dress participants who forgave themselves for failing at a task were more likely to pick themselves up and try again. "They didn't let that one failure define them," Neff says. "When you criticize yourself, you undermine your self-confidence,Simply Tulle Sweatheart Beaded Pleat Evening Dresses which is a huge part of motivation."

I devour books

I devour books. That is my euphemism for being so OCD that I can't put it down and live my life until I finish it. For shorter books, that's generally not a problem, but for the 974 page Pillars of the Earth...well, let's just say we ran out of food, my children clung to my legs asking for food, and the floors did not get vacuumed for a good five days while I whittled away at this book.

CLIFF HANGER: This book is not a cliff-hanger at the end of every chapter kind of book, which makes it easier to read it in multiple sittings. However, Follett does such a masterful job of character development, that I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next whether the end of the chapter contained a cliffhanger ending or not.

CHARACTER DEV'T: Each character is so beautifully defined and fleshed out, that they become almost real. I felt that I knew them personally, that I could accurately predict how they would react in different situations. None of them were 100% good or bad, just like in real life. Some priests were holy, others evil; some were rich people with big hearts, others with small minds and evil intentions; some poor farmers were judgmental, w/narrow-minded attitudes, others opened their doors to strangers.Sheath/Column Ruching Blue Chiffon Prom dresses

PLOT/PACE: Foreshadowing was a very powerful convention that Follett skillfully weaved in and out of every chapter. It gave subtle hints, but never so overt as to suggest that the reader may be an imbecile. Backstories meander and come to closure at such a nice pace, that it always feels like something is happening and things are being resolved, for better or for worse.

THEMES: My favorite theme was that natural consequences followed the actions of the characters. (I'm still a bit out of sorts after reading the deus ex machina riddled Breaking Dawn, where all the natural consequences of three books worth of actions were completely erased-ugh.) There was a natural ebb and flow of triumph and misfortunes in Pillars of the Earth. Good things happened to bad people and bad things happened to good people,Satin Sweetheart Split-front Floor-length Sweep Train Evening Dress just like in real life. Follett does not try to save his characters from themselves, or from each other, and I enjoyed that very much.

STRONG WOMEN: I absolutely adored the strong women in this book! What a joy to read about Aliena,Simply Chiffon One Shoulder Beaded Evening Dresses carving out her own future after her world had been turned upside down! Life knocked her down plenty, but each time, she got up, made a plan,Purple Chiffon A-line V-neck Beaded Applique Prom Dress and triumphed eventually. Ellen, and Agnes in her own way, were also strong women.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: As strange as it sounds, with all of the despair and misery that took place, the overarching take home for me, was HOPE. In the face of overwhelming adversity, these characters triumphed.Chiffon A-line/Princess Empire Beaded Prom Dress The road was hard and the journey was long, but they CHOSE hope. They CHOSE faith. And in the end, that was all that mattered.

New ad challenges economic benefits of Keystone pipeline

New ad challenges economic benefits of Keystone pipeline
In a television commercial set to air today, billionaire climate-change activist Tom Steyer is launching a fresh line of attack against the Keystone XL pipeline by questioning its economic benefits. The 90-second ad, provided to USA TODAY in advance of its first airing, is the third in a series of four commercials Steyer has funded as part of his effort to kill the pipeline. The 1,700-mile pipeline, which would carry heavy crude oil from the tar sands in Canada to Texas refineries, awaits approval by President Obama and the U.S. State Department. TransCanada, the pipeline's builder, needs the administration's approval for a cross-border permit.Obama has said his decision will turn on whether the pipeline increases greenhouse gas emissions. In the latest commercial, Steyer stands before spinning wind turbines in California to tout the "hundreds of thousands of jobs" created the USA's clean-energy industry. By contrast, he says the pipeline would result in just 35 permanent jobs. (The figures come from a draft State Department review, which also found the pipeline would generate 42,100 direct and indirect jobs during a two-year construction phase.)"As a businessman, I don't devalue any job," Steyer says in the commercial, "but 35 jobs maintaining a foreign oil pipeline, one that comes with real risks to the farms and towns and water supplies it would run through? That's not going to grow our economy."He is spending $1 million on the advertising series, which will conclude with an ad discussing climate change and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy last October.Steyer, a former hedge-fund chief with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion, is part of a vocal band of environmental activists who have have made Keystone a test case of the administration's resolve to address climate change. On Sunday, he's joining other activists to dedicate a "renewable energy barn" in Nebraska along the proposed pipeline route.Steyer also is a major Democratic donor who has worked to influence who sits in Congress. This year alone, a Steyer-funded super PAC spent $1.8 million backing fellow Keystone foe, Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey, in the Democrat's special election. In 2010, Steyer helped defeat an oil-industry backed proposal that would have reversed a California law capping greenhouse-gas emissions. At a time when the administration is working on policies to reduce carbon emissions, "it's not the time to make a 40-year commitment to harvesting some dirtiest oil in the world ... all for the benefit of a foreign oil company," said Chris Lehane, a former Clinton administration official who is an adviser to Steyer.Business and union groups have urged the administration to approve TransCanada's request, which has been pending for five years."This is a project that's kind of a no-brainer," said Matt Letourneau, a spokesman for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "It's a type of oil that will be produced in Canada, regardless of whether it is" piped through the United States or not, he said.

Facebook to test autoplay videos in mobile News Feed

Facebook announced Thursday that within the coming weeks, the company is testing autoplay videos within the mobile News Feed for a small group of U.S. users. When a mobile user swipes through their News Feed and comes across a video from an individual or a page of a musician or band, it will automatically play. Sound will only turn on after a user taps on the video.A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to Inside Facebook that these videos cannot be boosted or advertised at all beyond organic.According to Facebook, only videos posted by individual Facebook users or verified pages (such as celebrities) will play automatically within mobile. Videos will play silently until a user taps to hear sound. When the video stops playing, the user will be taken back to News Feed. Only videos uploaded directly to Facebook (or Instagram) will play automatically — not YouTube or Vimeo or other platform apps which post to Facebook.

This capability is not yet available for pages.Facebook’s Kelly Mayes introduced this new capability in a blog post:Today we’re starting to test an easier way to watch videos on Facebook. Now when you see a video in News Feed, it comes to life and starts playing. Videos initially play silently, and if you want you can tap to play with sound in full screen. Scroll past if you don’t want to watch.Mayes also addressed the issue of videos coming from advertisers, confirming that those videos will not automatically play:At first, this feature will be limited to videos posted by individuals, musicians, and bands. We’re doing this to make sure we create the best possible experience. Over time, we’ll continue to explore how to bring this to marketers in the future. While this is not the introduction to Facebook autoplay video ads that many people fear, this looks like Facebook’s way to test the capability of video automatically playing. Facebook traditionally rolls out products, works out functionality, then finds the best way to add targeted and relevant advertising on top. Users might be slightly more receptive on mobile to this capability than desktop, at least that’s what Facebook is guessing.Video ads on Facebook can be big business for the company, but latest reports suggest that Facebook has pushed back the rumored controversial autoplay video ads indefinitely.
