Yoghurt Week: Mango Popsicles

Todays yoghurt recipe is another one you can feel good about eating on a hot summer day mango popsicles! With the freshest and best-quality ingredients, these will go down a treat with everyone.

The recipe comes from the big tub of Chobani 2% Greek Yoghurt, but can also be found at the Chobani Kitchen website. I prepared these popsicles in the molds that Chobani Australia sent me along with all that delicious yoghurt (see Yoghurt Week: Banana Bread).

Chobani likes to call these popsicles Mango Frocho Pops, which I think is pretty cute! Theyve replaced froyo, short for frozen yoghurt, with frocho, short for frozen Chobani!

Youll need just four ingredients to bring these popsicles together: Chobani 2% Greek Yoghurt (or good-quality low-fat Greek yoghurt), fresh mangos (frozen will also work), a lemon, and honey. To prepare, simply throw everything in a food processor (a blender will also do the trick), process until smooth and pour into your popsicle molds. Im sure you could also make these in a Zoku Quick Pop Maker as well, which I do actually own, but I wanted to use the special Chobani molds for this post!

We loved the flavor of the Mango Frocho Pops! Im a little picky at times, so Id say the only thing I didnt like was the popsicle was a little bit too icy, rather than creamy. I would owe this to the fact that the yoghurt is low-fat. Perhaps a full-fat yoghurt would yield a creamier-textured popsicle. Feel free to experiment, and let me know how it goes!

Alignment needed for tyres to reach full label potential, says Pro-Align

Tyre labelling regulations that come into force the week after next offer switched-on workshops an even greater opportunity to sell profit-boosting wheel alignment checks, opines wheel alignment specialist Pro-Align. The label is expected to help retailers move from a primarily price-based, commodity style transaction to a more consultative approach, based on differentiated customer needs or preferences – “a perfect scenario for educating drivers about wheel alignment,” the company says.

“The new tyre labels mean that workshops now have an ideal opportunity to consult properly with customers to explain to them about the different characteristics of tyres and equally, understand the customers’ requirements,” explains Pro-Align managing director Paul Beaurain. “As part of this process, it is an ideal opportunity to underline the importance of correct wheel alignment, not least to ensure the tyres perform as their label suggests.”

As part of its customer consultation process, Pro-Align advises workshops to remind drivers that unless wheel alignment is checked at the time of tyre replacement, the new tyres are unlikely to achieve the same levels of performance as indicated on their label. This could lead to greater noise, higher fuel bills and reduced vehicle safety. What’s more, cars suffering from misalignment are likely to experience uneven or rapid tyre wear, meaning they will not deliver their optimum mileage.

“With nine out of ten cars suffering from some form of misalignment, alignment checks should be seen as an integral part of the tyre replacement process not an optional extra,” adds Beaurain. “By taking just a few minutes to explain these issues to customer and then carry out the checks, workshops are likely to unlock a host of other servicing opportunities.”

Kite surfers inspire new wind-energy tech

Adrenaline junkies long ago learned that flying a kite with surf and snow boards strapped to their feet is an awesome way to get their fix. Now, energy companies are looking to harness the source of the fun — high altitude wind — to generate electricity.

The concept of kite power has been floating around for a few years based on the data-backed premise that winds are stronger and more consistent 1,000 to 1,500 feet off the ground than they are at 500 feet, which is about as high as the tallest traditional wind turbines reach.

Devices built to harness that high-altitude wind hold the promise of greater operational reliability and efficiency as well as lower materials cost per megawatt of electricity generated.

This week, Berlin-based wind energy developer NTS GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute revealed details of a scheme to use a 215-square-foot kite to pull a vehicle along a train track. A generator converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electricity.

Automated measuring and control mechanisms on the vehicle are being designed to steer the kite in either a figure-eight or sine-wave flight path that can generate enough power to pull a vehicle that weighs one ton, according to a Fraunhofer.

To date, the system has been tested on 1,300-foot-long straight track as the kite was remotely controlled. Future automated versions will be on a loop track.

Simulations of the technology suggest 24 kites could generate 120 gigawatt hours of electricity a year, enough to supply power to around 30,000 homes. The partners said they have attracted earlier investors and are at work turning the concept into reality.

Wind power: A success that should be celebrated

PPL’s announcement that it will mothball its 44-year-old Corette coal plant in 2015 has generated a lively conversation this election season. The plant is old, dirty and uncompetitive in today’s market. Yet, little of the coverage has focused on the relative benefits for Montana in this story. I would like to offer a few facts for the reader’s consideration.

First, at least a portion of the energy from Corette is being purchased and consumed by NorthWestern Energy ratepayers at the contracted cost of $53 a megawatt hour.

Meanwhile, NorthWestern ratepayers have just built and purchased the new Spion Kop wind farm in Montana that is estimated by the Public Service Commission to deliver power at a cost of $53 a megawatt hour. The cost ratepayers pay for energy from Corette does not include the total cost of its impact on our air or water quality — pollution costs that are borne by all of us. Spion Kop, on the other hand, will deliver equally affordable energy while avoiding all of Corette’s air and water pollution.

The difference you as a NorthWestern Energy ratepayer pay between coal and wind is even starker if we broaden our outlook beyond Corette. NorthWestern Energy ratepayers pay a whopping $63 a megawatt hour for coal energy from Colstrip for example. Compare that to the cost of wind energy from the Judith Gap wind farm, where NorthWestern Energy ratepayers pay just $47 a megawatt hour. And the rates of Judith Gap and Spion Kop are stable, like a fixed-rate home mortgage, because wind energy is always free, unlike fossil fuels.

The potential loss of the 35 jobs Corette supports in the Billings community is troubling, though far from devastating in a community the size of Billings where the largest employer, the Billings Clinic, has around 3,300 employees based in Billings. We all hope the workers at Corette will be re-employed in one of PPL’s many other energy facilities in the state. But still, if job losses are a concern, the jobs may be being made up elsewhere. Wind energy, for example, has added at least 37 new permanent positions in Montana, directly employed by the wind industry, in 2012 alone.
